The University of Western Ontario seems to be anxiously awaiting the arrival of Swine flu. That or they're just allowing people a free pass on exam and projects dates. This comes after receiving an e-mail from Student Information Services regarding an online form that exempts students due to H1N1-like symptoms.
Maybe I haven't read into this thoroughly enough, but it seems like students have a new scapegoat to academics.
Furthermore, why is the university so anxious about the break out of this disease when there have only been 3,500 cases across ontario and only 15 deaths? I've been informed (by she who must not be named - no, not Voldermort - but someone on the USC) that we have a full H1N1 committee and response program should the disease break out.
For all those looking to bend the academic system, the form can be found here:

I really don't understand what the whole panic is. We deconstructed the entire problem in another class and found that close to 3500 people die of the seasonal flu every year, as opposed to around 74 that have died in all of Canada. Not to say that its not awful that those people lost their lives, but I hardly believe it should set off widespread panic.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the above comment. I think this entire thing has been blown way out of proportion. All of a sudden, we're all panicked about the "pandemic" which to be honest, really doesn't seem to be affecting many people... when you really look at it, the numbers are rather small. Most doctors will tell you that this is really no worse than the average every day flu bug. Its true that its sad people are losing their lives, but why are we calling it an epidemic and allowing people free, note free escapes from class? It really just gives people an added vacation because lets be honest, theres BOUND to be a serious amount of abuse with this little policy.
